Mar. 30, 2013 - ELC Wild and Scenic Film Festival at the Majestic Theater
As a kick-off to Earth Day celebrations, the Environmental Learning Center (ELC) is sponsoring a Wild and Scenic Film Festival hosted by the Majestic 11 Theater, 940 14th Lane in Vero Beach on Sunday, April 21 2013 . For one exciting day and night the ELC will have two events that bring the outdoors inside with showings of short documentaries incorporating inspiring environmental messages.

Mar. 23, 2013 - Environmental Learning Center Presents “Treasured Waters”
As part of its 25th anniversary celebration, the ELC presented the first of two nature book readings, hosted by Vero Beach Book Center on March 8. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres were served along with anecdotes and inspiration that were shared with an enthusiastic audience by artist Rick Kelly and author Camille Yates as they recalled their experiences creating the book “Treasured Waters.”

On Saturday, April 13, the Environmental Learning Center (ELC) is sponsoring a 25th Birthday Bash Fishing Tournament. It will be hosted by the Coastal Conservation Association and Capt. Hiram’s resort. All events will be held on Bimini Beach at Captain Hiram’s Resort located at 1580 US Hwy 1, Sebastian. This event is for both landlubbers and old salts.

Wabasso Island will be filled with eco-activities on Sunday, March 3, 2013 for the ELC's 17th Annual EcoFest. This year’s event is greatly expanded marking the celebration of ELC’s 25th Anniversary. The theme for EcoFest is “Life on the Lagoon” meaning all of the activities touch upon some aspect of the 156 mile long Indian River Lagoon. Admission to EcoFest is free. Hours are 12:00 – 4:00 p.m,

On Sunday, February 24, 2013 the Vero Beach Polo Club will host a Polo Charity Match benefitting the Environmental Learning Center. The event is part of the ELC’s four month long 25th anniversary celebration series. The match will begin at 2 p.m. at the Polo Grounds located on 12th Street between 74th and 82nd Avenue. The ELC is launching its 25th anniversary celebration with a “Lagoon Treasures” Photo Contest. Beauty abounds along the natural shoreline of the Indian River Lagoon. The flora and fauna that grace this habitat are often referred to as our “hidden treasures.” The ELC is challenging explorers of all ages to uncover this cache of nature’s bounty through photography. The contest is free for all ages.

Jan. 25, 2013 - ELC Celebrates 25 years
The Board of Trustees, members, volunteers, and staff at the 64-acre ELC on Wabasso Island are looking forward to a Silver Anniversary Celebration in 2013. It was 25 years ago that the Pelican Island Audubon Society signed the papers creating the ELC. In recognition of this milestone, the community will be bustling from points north and south with lagoon-themed events from January through April.

Jan. 2, 2013 - Biking TM Goodwin with the ELC
The ELC introduces a new program for biking and nature enthusiasts. It is a biking tour of the TM Goodwin Waterfowl Management Area in western Indian River County. The area is part of the Great Florida Birding Trail. Participants will bike on the hardpacked levees next to the wetlands to see snowy egrets, great blue herons, night herons, osprey, and plenty of waterfowl.

Dec. 21, 2012 - Geocaching and Beach Walks at the ELC
Geocaching and Beach Walks are among a variety of activities conducted by the ELC during January. Geocaching is intended for families with children who are at least 9 years old. It is a scavenger hunt for nature’s treasures with the aid of a GPS receiver. The Beach Walks are ideal for those of any age who wish to explore one of the area beaches with an ELC Naturalist.

On January 2, 2013 from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM, the ELC is conducting a special program for grandparents who have grandkids visiting them. It is an opportunity for grandparents to share time with the grandkids while they learn about Florida’s amazing natural resources. The program is lead by Rosemary Badger, an environmental educator who specializes in early childhood education.

Dec. 17, 2012 - Environmental Learning Center Announces Winter Break Campout
The ELC is offering A Winter Break Campout on January 2 -4, 2013. This action packed outdoor program is for 12 to 17 year old students. Participants will paddle kayaks to an island in the Indian River Lagoon where they will camp for 2 nights. From this base camp, students will be led on an exploration of other islands and winding mangrove tree trails.

Dec. 14, 2012 - ELC’s Swamp Buggy Tour
The ELC is offering a Swamp Buggy Tour through a ranch west of Vero Beach. It is more than a buggy ride through woods and wetlands. It’s an adventure through “Old Florida,” when preservation was honored and nature revered. Many reminders of yesteryear are quickly vanishing, yet here you can still find bromeliads, bobcat, quail, deer and reminders of Florida’s rich cattle ranching history.

On Fri. Nov. 16, 2012 the ELC hosted its annual golf tournament at the Bent Pine Golf Club in Vero Beach. The Tournament sponsor was the Northern Trust Bank. Head Golf Professional, Pat Gorman, and his staff worked diligently to have the golf course in ideal condition for the 94 players. In keeping with the ELC’s environmental mission, the tournament theme was “Birds of a Feather Golf Together.”

The Nature Nook Gift Shop at the ELC reopens for the season on November 1 with brand new merchandise. A sampling of new items includes: colorful scarves made from Indian Saris, pearls from Asia, unique jewelry, weather stations, toys and crafts for children, kites, dress-up wings for girls, marble animals, unusual kinds of puppets, and best-selling books for all ages.

The ELC is hosting its 20th Charity Golf Tournament on Fri. Nov. 16, 2012 at Bent Pine Golf Club in Vero Beach. In keeping with the ELC’s environmental mission, the tournament theme is “Birds of a Feather Golf Together.” Included in the festivities are bird-themed games, contests and prizes, as well as valuable raffle opportunities. Co-Chairpersons are Susan Friesell and Susie Kasten.
