Connecting Financial Planning with Environmental Impact
At the Environmental Learning Center, we welcome thousands of students, families, and community members each year to learn about the Indian River Lagoon through hands-on, feet-wet experiences. Our programs are rooted in the Indian River Lagoon and use direct, hands-on experiences to help people understand native species, habitats, and the natural systems that support this place.
If you’re 70½ or older and taking Required Minimum Distributions from your IRA, you have an opportunity to support this work in a way that also makes good financial sense.
What Is a Qualified Charitable Distribution?
A Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) allows you to transfer funds directly from your IRA to the ELC. This donation can satisfy your annual Required Minimum Distribution while providing meaningful tax advantages.
The key benefit: the donated amount doesn’t count as taxable income. This can help you avoid higher tax brackets, reduce Medicare premiums, and lower taxes on your Social Security benefits. Unlike a regular IRA withdrawal, there’s no need to itemize deductions because the exclusion happens automatically.
Eligibility Requirements
You can make a QCD if you:
- Are 70½ or older at the time of distribution
- Have funds in a Traditional, Roth, SEP, or inactive SIMPLE IRA
- Want to support our qualified 501(c)(3) organization
Note that donor-advised funds and private foundations don’t qualify for this type of distribution.
How to Make Your Gift
The process is straightforward:
- Contact your IRA custodian and request a direct trustee-to-trustee transfer to the Environmental Learning Center
- Ensure the check is payable to the ELC, not to you personally
- Complete the transfer by December 31 to count it toward the current tax year
This content is intended for informational purposes only. As the Environmental Learning Center is not a tax advisor, please consult with your own tax professional to understand how this opportunity may work for you.
Why This Matters for the Lagoon
The Indian River Lagoon faces ongoing challenges: nutrient pollution, habitat loss, and the effects of climate change. Education is one of our most powerful tools for building a community that understands these issues and takes action.
When you support the ELC through a QCD, you’re funding:
- Youth engagement beyond field trips, including summer camps, Jr. Naturalist activities, and play-based learning in the Nature Playscape and Imagination Station
- Stewardship of the campus itself, including maintaining native habitats, demonstration landscapes, and living laboratories that model best practices for lagoon-friendly living
- Signature community events that bring thousands of people to the campus each year and build broad community support for the lagoon
- Art, culture, and nature integration, with rotating gallery exhibitions, artist talks, and creative programming that connects conservation with the arts
- Volunteer-powered programs that support restoration, monitoring, events, and visitor engagement through EcoAction and community service days
- Environmental literacy and wellness for adults, including lectures, guided walks, workshops, wellness classes, and lifelong learning opportunities
