Experiential Environmental Education focusing on the Indian River Lagoon Ecosystem designed for 4th & 5th Graders

ELC GreenTeen! volunteers have the opportunity to build a resume, earn community service hours for school, make new friends, learn all about conservation and the local environment, and have fun while helping educate campers and ELC visitors about wildlife and the local ecosystem. The ELC GreenTeen! program is reasonably flexible to fit our busy teens’ schedules (teens pick their own dates) and runs from the end of May 2019 till March 2020. 


















The GreenTeen! volunteer program is competitive and only accepts a total of 22 responsible, driven and enthusiastic teens per 10 month program period, so please be thorough in application responses.  For those accepted, the tuition for the 2019-2020 program is $50.00 which covers the cost of the t-shirt, lecture and workshop attendance, four free admission passes to the ELC, food and supplies for GreenTeen! orientation, and professional training by ELC Environmental Educators. Scholarship funding available to those who qualify. Please contact ELC Summer Day Camps Coordinator, Sarah Christopherson at for additional scholarship information.

Applicants must:

  • Be between the ages of 14 and 18 (completed 8th grade or higher upon start of ELC summer day camps in June 2019)

  • Complete the online application in its entirety by the deadline on April 29th. This should be done by the teenager applying, not a parent or guardian.

    • If accepted as a program participant, tuition of $50.00 is due before orientation on May 24th.

  • Attend training and orientation on Friday, May 24th from 5:00 – 10:00pm

    • If you cannot attend orientation but still wish to participate, please contact ELC Summer Day Camps Coordinator, Sarah Christopherson as soon as possible

  • Commit to work as an ELC summer day camp counselor (minimum 1 full camp session, 3-5 days)​

  • Commit to the following*.  Register for time slots at (the link to will be sent out shortly):

  • May 2019 – end of March 2020: Attend ELC lectures and workshops (minimum 3)

  • November 2019 – end of March 2020: Lead public educational programs such as teaching booths, work with aquariums, and volunteer for special events at the ELC (minimum 3)

  • Parents/Guardians: read the indemnification form on the online application and check the acknowledgment box

  • Have access to reliable transportation and the ability to arrive on time and be picked up on time

  • Should show independence and responsibility by contacting ELC Environmental Educators directly via phone or personal e-mail when necessary. Parents may be copied on e-mail correspondences, but the ELC Educators do expect to hear directly from our GreenTeen!

*Seniors graduating in spring of 2019 are exempt from this requirement, but still encouraged to participate when able.

The GreenTeen! volunteer program focuses on three main areas:

  1. Assist ELC Environmental Educators with summer day camps as camp counselors (minimum 1 full camp session, 3-5 days)

  2. Gain knowledge and become stronger stewards of the local ecosystem through attending educational lectures, workshops and classes from the following: ELC EcoTalks and Plant Identification Walks, and others to be announced (minimum 3)

  3. Work as ELC volunteers leading fun nature-based activities and booths to engage ELC guests.  ELC Environmental Educators will hold a special training session for GreenTeen! volunteers, where they will learn how to run fun education booths, assist with aquariums including the Touch Tank, and help with annual public events such as Half-Haunted Halloween, WinterGreen Night Lights, EcoFest, Star Parties, National Estuaries Day, waterway cleanups, and more (minimum 3)
