From conservation wins to community programs, explore how ELC Vero Beach is showing up in the news and making an impact.

Enchantment at ELC’s Mangroves, Moonlight & Mykonos event

A touch of Mykonos bloomed amidst the mangroves as the Environmental Learning Center transported more than 200 guests to the sun-drenched shores of Greece for its Mangroves, Moonlight & Mykonos fundraiser, a fitting match as our own coastal gem and the famed Greek paradise are both havens for lovers of the sea.

ELC’s Lagoonapalooza: A splash of eco excitement, awareness

While Mother Nature generally provides the entertainment at the Environmental Learning Center, with birds chirping, frogs croaking, fish splashing and a cacophony of insects buzzing, this year’s Lagoonapalozza augmented those sounds with a man-made musical component.

The family-friendly nature and music festival, which took place on the 64-acre campus, was a way to spread the word about the importance of preserving the Indian River Lagoon, one of Florida’s most biodiverse estuaries.

In praise of founders’ foresight as ELC celebrates 36 years

The prescience of Environmental Learning Center founders decades ago is even more notable today, at a time when Florida’s governor is pushing to develop golf courses and other amenities on pristine state parklands.

Fortunately for us, in 1986, ELC founders George Bunnell, Maggy Bowman and other environmentalists had the foresight to preserve a 65-acre area of land in the center of the lagoon and create a conservational campus, where children and adults can learn about nature and ways to protect it for the benefit of humans, plants and animals alike.
