Environmental Volunteer News December 2020

The latest news and opportunities for environmental volunteers in Indian River County, Florida.

Wintergreen Night Lights 2020

We have added 3 more days of Wintergreen Night Lights due to the popularity of the canoe quick trips through the lit mangrove trails! We added 12/17, 12/18, and 12/19 from 6-9 pm in addition to 12/10, 12/11, 12/12. The bonfire, S’mores, Touch Tank, Discovery Station, and canoe trips will all be available both weeks 6-9 pm.

We need volunteers to help on campus during the 6 nights with everything from information, controlling the number of people in the rooms, canoes, Touch Tank, S’mores, bonfire, and Membership/Volunteer table. If you haven’t informed Nancy already and you can help, please email nancy@discoverelc.org with the days that work for you.

The event is free to visit the campus, the canoe trips are by reservation (book your trip here) or calling 772-589-5050. There are 4 launch times between 6-9 pm.

We have changed the dates for s’more making. We will be assembling the kits Wednesday 12/9 and Wednesday 12/16 2:30-4:30 pm. Please let Nancy know if you can help.

Volunteer Open House and Orientation

We are very fortunate to have several new volunteers! We will have a Volunteer Open House Monday 12/14, from 1-2:30 pm. It will be followed by a Volunteer Orientation at 2:30-3 pm on 12/14.

If you know someone that might be interested in volunteering please mention the open house to them or if they can’t make please connect them with Nancy (nancy@discoverelc.org). If you are a new volunteer or a volunteer that hasn’t attended a Volunteer Orientation yet please try to attend. We try to keep it to a half-hour. It will cover some ELC history, organization details, staff introduction, and basic logistics when you are volunteering.

Upcycled Plastic Bottle Art Workshop

Many ELC volunteers will remember the great recycled plastic bottle flowers that were in the trees off the boardwalk between the Entry and Admin Building. They were made by local artist, Leigh Bennet. Leigh will be holding a workshop to make the flowers on 12/12 from 11 am to 12 pm outside at the picnic tables under the Discovery Station. A $5 donation is suggested, with a maximum of 15 participants. We are collecting plastic bottle caps, soda, and water bottles to use for the workshop.

Other Volunteering Opportunities in December

  • NOAA Planet Stewards Beach Cleanup #3 - Saturday, Dec 12th - 9-11 am at Golden Sands Beach. Join us as we clean up the beach to keep garbage from entering the ocean and collect what we need to create our trash-art for the Discovery Station as part of the NOAA Planet Stewards project with our Junior Interpreters. Register here.

  • New look for the ELC van - Check out the new look of the ELC van! We hope that this new form of advertisement will help spread the word around the Treasure and Space coast about the good things you can do to #getoutside at the ELC! You can help us promote this new feature. If you know of a business or residence in a high traffic area that would be willing to park the van please let us know. We are looking for places to park the van along the Treasure and Space Coasts.

Holiday Shopping at ELC

Holiday shopping is upon us and we are stocking the nature nook store in the entry pavilion with some new products. Read more about what's in store here. If you have questions about any of the new goods please contact nancy@discoverelc.org

The ELC is hosting a youth holiday market featuring homemade goods from the homeschool community in Vero Beach. Come #shoplocal on December 12th from 10 am to 2 pm. Learn more here.

New Osprey Platform coming soon!

Our osprey platforms have suffered from old age (join the club!) and wind/weather damage. A new osprey platform will be rebuilt by the end of the year. The lumber has been delivered, but the weather has not been cooperating for the installation process. We will keep you informed.

We still need your help...

If you can't make it into the ELC, there are still a few ways you can really help further our mission! We are working hard to engage a larger audience and strengthen our online presence. There are a few ways you can do this right from the comfort of your home:

  • Facebook - share our posts! Yes, it's that simple, the more our posts are shared by our followers the better rankings we get with Facebook. If you see a post you like or think others would appreciate, please share it with your network. And ask your friends and family to follow us.

  • Google Reviews - If you love the ELC, let the world know! Submit a review on google. Right now we have 49 reviews and hope to get up to 100 by the end of the year. Just google "Environmental Learning Center Vero Beach" and on the right-hand side of your screen scroll down to the reviews, then click "Write a review."

  • TripAdvisor - Have you taken a trip and used TripAdvisor to find a place to go? Help visitors know that the ELC is a must-see destination in Vero Beach! Go to the ELC TripAdvisor page and scroll down to the review section and click "Write a review." We are currently #10 of 51 things to do in Vero Beach - and we want to be in the top 5! Thanks for helping us get there.

If you have any questions on how to share, submit a review, or want to get started on social media contact nicole@discoverelc.org.

REMINDER - Things to do at the ELC

Sometimes it's difficult to keep up with all the things going on at ELC, so we are trying to make that easier for you! We have created a dedicated QR code for visitors to scan which will take them to an online list of the latest activities on campus.

This sheet is located at the front desk and guests can easily scan the code by using the phone on their camera. Not sure how to use a QR code? If the visitor has an iPhone, just ask them to open the camera on the 'photo' mode and point it to the QR code on the page. A box with the website link should automatically pop up, have them tap it and they will be sent to this page. (This page will be updated often as we get new activities and exhibits on campus.) Confused? Check out the tutorial here.
