Join us for a walking tour of Captain Forster's Hammock Preserve!
Join our knowledgeable nature guides/history enthusiasts for a comfortably-paced walk of
Captain Forster Hammock Preserve! The Preserve contains trails through mature maritime and coastal hammock habitats. The 110 acre preserve conserves natural resources and wetland plant communities and borders Jungle Trail, a State designated green way and a byway of the Indian River Lagoon National Scenic Highway and contains one of the largest remaining coastal maritime hammocks on Orchid Island. The site was home to Captain Frank Forster, one of the first Orchid Island residents who homesteaded on the barrier island growing winter vegetables and fishing along the Indian River Lagoon. The tour is designed such that people with a basic level of fitness can complete the entire tour in the time allotted.
Please check back on May 25 for more information.
