American White Pelican
Habitat
In spring, the American White Pelican travels to its breeding habitat in the Northern Plains region of the country. They are migratory, overwintering in Florida, and can sometimes be seen on Pelican Island.
Size
The American White Pelican is one of the largest birds in North America, with a height of 4–5.5 feet and a wingspan of 8–9.5 feet.
Characteristics
The pelican uses its bill pouch for feeding by holding prey in place, tipping its head up, and swallowing. Carrying food in their bill is a myth. During the breeding season, males develop a bill horn on top of the bill, thought to be a sign of strength. This is later shed from the bill.
Seasonal Presence
Unlike their cousin, the Brown Pelican, which is a year-round resident of Florida, the American White Pelican is a winter resident.
ELC Connection
The Pelican Island Pontoon Tour is a good opportunity to catch a glimpse of this winter resident.
