Mangrove Tree Crab
Habitat & Behavior
Live amongst the canopy of mangrove forests, but do venture down into the root system and exposed mud during low tide.
Size & Camouflage
At less than 1 inch wide, they are masters of camouflage, blending in with the mangrove bark by having a similar coloration of greenish-brown. They also have small, black hairs at the tips of their legs that help them climb the trees and cling to foliage.
Diet & Ecosystem Role
Consumes mangrove leaves as a primary source of food and contributes to recycling nutrients back into the mangrove ecosystem.
Predators
Birds, raccoons, and even some fish species prey on these crabs.
Reproduction
Females can deposit up to 35,000 eggs as many as 6 times a year!
