Snowbird

It is that time year when we welcome both the human and bird varieties of snowbirds.  There are several species of migratory warblers that have come to South Florida for the winter.  A common one we see is the Palm Warbler, it is one we see most in backyards and here at ELC.  Palm Warblers travel further than other warblers arriving from Canada.

Winter months the warbler colors are muted, with the Palm Warbler having a faded yellow underside with light streaking of the breast.  It has a light-colored line just above the eye.  The Palm Warbler forages on open ground or low vegetation.  One distinguishing behavior is a tail bob while foraging.  Palm Warbler will feed on insects and berries.

Keep an eye out for this handsome warbler at ELC. The Black and White Warbler has very distinct markings, unlike any other warbler.  They can be found in forest or forest edges.  Unlike other warblers they have extra-long claws and heavier legs for foraging on bark.  The Black and White Warbler feed primarily on insects.  They will be one of the first to travel back to Northern home in the spring, so make sure you check them out while they are still here.
