Reinventing Our Nature Center
The ELC envisions a world where all individuals of all walks of life and in all places – urban, suburban, rural – living nearby our Indian River Lagoon or far away – are healthy, happy, scientifically literate, informed citizens, deeply connected with their local environment.
ELC’s goal – through participatory, immersive, nature-based experiences accessible to all – is to deepen the human connection with and understanding of other species on our precious planet, so that all humanity can live in harmony with the rest of our natural world.
By following our Master Plan roadmap, the ELC will have the tools needed to transform into an essential asset of the community, strengthen their fiscal position, and ultimately become even more effective in educating, inspiring, and empowering all people to be active stewards of the environment and their own well-being.
Education & Event Pavilion and Oval
Funding for the first project in the organization’s long-range Master Plan—the Education & Event Pavilion and Oval has been secured. The ELC received a $1M pledge from inventor and business owner Thomas R. Schidel of Vero Beach. Mr. Schidel’s gift will provide for the design, construction and maintenance of a new Education & Event Pavilion and Oval on the ELC’s Wabasso Island campus.
The outdoor facility will be ideal for large-scale events and concerts, with a capacity to host up to 1,100 people. The Pavilion will offer shade, cooling overhead fans, comfort facilities, as well as storage and space for staff to effectively lead group activities. The accompanying Oval will be a large turf area ringed by native plants and will serve as space for guests to sit while they enjoy lectures, musical performances, and other educational programs. The Education & Event Pavilion and Oval will also be available to rent for special private occasions.
